Learning to trust your gut instinct can bring strength and confidence to your life. Who could you be if you stopped telling yourself a story and started actually listening to your gut?
So, today I want to talk with you about how you can trust your gut instinct. Your gut instinct is basically that voice or that feeling that’s inside of you, that tells you how to proceed in all of the different situations you run into in your day to day life.
For instance, before I really started listening to my gut, anytime there was any kind of conflict, even if it was just kind of in passing between strangers, my gut would tell me, speak up, say something, you know, speak your mind, share your opinions, but my body and my behavior would shrink down really, really small and avoid any kind of conflict.
That behavior was really out of alignment for me because it was not lining up with my gut, my inside voice that was telling me how I should proceed in this situation.
And, living out of alignment led to anxiety and panic attacks and all kinds of things that really interrupted the quality of my life. So I made a change and I made actually a lot of changes.
And listening to my gut was just one of those changes that I made and it has made a huge impact in my life and how happy and grounded and joyful I feel now.
So I’m here today to share with you some of those tools and some of those ways that I have learned to listen to that voice inside. So go ahead and grab a pen and a piece of paper and let’s dive in.
In order to learn how to trust your gut instinct, you have to be able to hear it. If you’re going through your day-to-day life, and you’re not paying attention to you, or what your thinking, then you’re not really paying attention to your gut and what it’s trying to tell you.
So this is going to sound kind of silly or crazy, but basically what I want you to do is think about what you’re thinking about. Just throughout your day as you’re going to work or taking the kids to school or going to the grocery store, I want you to tune in and think about what’s on your mind. Learning to trust your gut instinct will be made so much easier if you are tuning in to your head chatter and can clear that out of the way.
What kind of thoughts are filling those spaces of time when you’re not focused and concentrating?
When you’re going through your normal day, what’s on your mind? What are you thinking about? What is taking up space in your brain?
This is especially important to be tuned into when you have a headache or when your back hurts or when you’re cranky so you can see if any specific thoughts are contributing to your physical state.
At the end of each day, write in a journal or a notebook about what was on your mind that day.
Doing this for a couple of weeks will give you some good information to look back at and see if there are any trends or patterns developing where you have a certain type of thought on your mind all day long and your body shows physical symptoms that can be tied back to those feelings.
For instance, my thoughts were really dominated by what if XYZ happened? And it was always more what if negative things happened. So, of course, that manifested into anxiety and hyperactivity
If there is a pattern of thoughts that you can identify, that’s a really good step towards being able to trust your gut instinct. If you’re in your mind all the time, then your mind is clouded and filled with different thoughts. You have to cut the chatter in order to really be able to hear and trust your gut instinct.
Get Into Your Body
This might sound kind of weird, but I want you to let your body start to make some choices and decisions for you. I want you to pretend that your gut is a person and that person is going through your day with you.
So, if you feel the need to make a left, make a left. If you suddenly feel the need to go buy a yogurt, go buy a yogurt. Just allow your body to have these different choices and then make the choice for you without overthinking it.
Stay out of your head and get into your body. And if your body says, I want to go do this right now, go do that.
The reason this is so important for learning to trust your gut instinct is that it gets you out of your mind. Remember, your mind is full of chatter and it is really good and sending you down a rabbit hole of analysis.
But, what does that get you?
Ever heard of analysis paralysis?
If you really want to trust your gut instinct you have to FEEL it … not think it. So, getting into your body and allowing your body to make those decisions for you helps to build that relationship and that trust.
Obviously, I’m not saying to never make a decision using your head. There is a time and a place for weighing the pros and cons. But, there are also a ton of decisions that you make every day that could be left up to trust your gut instinct.
Setting boundaries protects your energy.
By this, I mean setting boundaries on your energy and your time. So if there are people in your life who inspire you and make you feel good and happy to be around, then spend more time with them if you can.
If they don’t live nearby, spend more time connecting with them and interacting with them. Use the Marco polo app to send videos, send little text messages, send emails. Just stay in contact with them and really put more effort and energy into nurturing those relationships.
If there are people in your life who make you feel not too excited about being around them, set boundaries.
Do what you can to not spend as much time engaging with those people. And also spend less time thinking about your interactions with them.
This is really going to help clear the air to bring your gut voice forward more.
Do what you can to bring more happiness and inspiration into your day. Interacting with people who help you to feel happy and inspired is the perfect starting point.
The more that you invite your gut to be a part of your day, the bigger and louder that she’s going to be. To the point that you won’t be able to not listen to her.
You will have to trust your gut instinct because she will not be ignored.
The first few steps of this post were about clearing the clutter. You have to do this to make room to trust your gut instinct. This next step is really about inviting your gut to speak up.
Dreaming big is really that invitation to your gut to talk with you. You have to open your mind to the possibility of things being different or better. That is how you will wake up your gut and your instincts to really talk with you.
And share where you’re meant to go and where you’re meant to be. You know that you have magic inside of you. Creating that space is a big step to having your gut be a larger part of the conversation.
And, how do you do that?
90-Day Letter To Trust Your Gut Instinct
This is an activity that I do usually every three months and it’s super powerful and really fun.
It’s actually something that really helps me to discover what my big dreams are. Because I’m not necessarily thinking about them all the time.
This activity helps to create that space for me to have those big dreams.
What I want you to do is write a letter to yourself from the future. I want you to write a letter to yourself. That says, “I am so proud and so excited of everything that I have accomplished in the last 90 days. It has been amazing to see X, Y, and Z happen. I have been wanting A, B and C to happen for so long and now it has” etc.
Now, you don’t necessarily have to accomplish everything in those 90 days. You could actually write, “I’m so proud that I have started X, Y, and Z. And, that I have worked on A, B, and C twice a week for the last 90 days.”
Make it realistic, make it something that you can do. But write it in the past tense as though it’s already been done.
That’s where the power of this activity comes in. Because you are sending a message to your brain that you’ve already accomplished the tasks. It helps to take away that fear of starting because it’s already been done.
Trust Your Gut Instinct … you won’t regret it
We have covered a lot in this post. And I know that all of these steps feel strange and some of them sound silly.
But they are really powerful. These are things that I’ve done myself that have made a huge difference in my life. And, and how grounded and happy and fulfilled I feel.
I hope that they will help you. I hope that you’ll give them a try. And work to let go of that negative story that you tell yourself. So that you can really step into your strength.
I want you to live boldly and share your magic. You can make these next decades of life big and bold!!
